The Wedding at Cana

Gospel According to John
2.1-12.
On the third day thre was a wedding in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there.Jesus and the disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out , the mother of Jesus said to him,"They have no wine"And Jesus said to her " Woman what concern is that to youand to me?My hour has not yet come".His mother said to the servants."Do whatever he tells you".Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification.Jesus told them "Fill the jars with water".And they filled them up to the brim.He said to them"Now draw some out and take it to the chief steward."So they took it.When the steward tasted the water that had become wine and did not know where it came from, the steward called the bridegroom and said to him," Everyone serves the good wine first and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now."Jesus did this the first of his signs , In Cana of Galilee and revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers and his disciples and they remained there a few days.
Here we find Jesus performing his first miracle in public. This is not an ordinary miracle it is a miracle that transforms something normal or natural into another form, which is better and useful in a different way.Two fats are evident here. The first is that Jesus transforming something and second is that it is public manifestation of the Divine power of Jesus, the Word Incarnate and the Redeemer of the world.Another point is that Jesus performs this miracle at the instance of His Mother Mary who was very much present in the wedding hall.More than the mere performance of a miracle which is attributed to the Divine Power, what stands out here is that Jesus is very alive to our necessity and he cares for our need.Jesus never disappoints us, He continues to support and encourage us in all our endeavours.God never lets down a needy person provided we ask him in good faith.God is always present to us to answer to our prayer.Mother Mary had the intuition that Jesus was the Son of God and it was this intuition that prompted Mary to place the petition before God, who for a moment doubts the bridegroom and his family but eventually agrees to perform the miracle. The bridegroom may not be deserving the divine intervention but it is a must that the Divine Intervention is to be made clear to all present there.Even when we are undeserving God shows his readiness to help. Our good deeds and our predisposition make us worthy to receive the gift of God.
