The triviality of life instances and the call of God
Gospel According to John
1.43-51
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him "Follow me"..... When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said to him,"Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"Nathaniel asked him."Where did you get to know me?"Jesus answered,"I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathaniel replied,"Rabbi, you are the Son of God!You are the King of Israel!"Jesus answered,"Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree ?You will see greater things than these."And he said to them,Very truly,I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man".
Here we find Jesus extending unconditional invitation to join with him as members of his Kingdom. The deserving men are identified by their honesty and simple character. The simple instances of life are used by Jesus in divine ways to inspire others to follow Him.The fact that Nathaniel was sitting under a fig tree did not sound like an extraordinary behavior. We sit under a tree to take rest and shelter. Here Jesus may be alluding to the fact that Nathaniel was alone immersed in thinking about Heavenly matters. That sight endeared Jesus to Nataniel. Or was he there, was it just a thought of Nathaniel that made him to say that You are the Son of God.Nathaniel had this intuition that Jesus was the Son of God.We people must have these sorts of correct intuitions about things related to life. Moreover, to be called by Jesus is the rarest honour that we human beings get in our life.Let us pray for that.Let us try to be with the God Almighty.Let us hold Him close to our heart and head, in thought and feelings.
