Gospel According to John
1.10-15
"Very truly I tell you we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?.No one has ascended to heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life."
Here we find Jesus referring to a simple fact of our daily life that if you refuse to believe something even in the face of straight evidences and testimony, the task or the activity itself is worthless.Because you choose to be non-believing.The basic trust if we are missing in earthly matters we may also start doubting the heavenly matters. The development of faith in oneself and others , according to psychological theories is a product of our upbringing.A child who is well treated and well looked after may develop positive trust in others. But it is not a straight conclusion that one who believes in others also believe in God.If we don't have the tendency to believe unconditionally it is very difficult to live in this world. It is simply impractical to live.Believing in God is a product of our tendency to believe unconditionally, the gift of God that we believe in an unseen God and that we are his children.Everyone is endowed with this gift in different measure and if we nurture it well it grows and bears much fruit that he becomes united with God, in search of Eternity.
Jesus also mentions about Moses raising the bronze serpent in the desert when the people were bitten by serpents.Moses raised the serpent in order to exhort the people to pray to God so that God protects them from further bitings.Jesus says that when He is crucified in the hands of the people it is for them only that the Son of Man is raised and suffers. The atonement of Jesus for the sins of man is the supreme sacrifice God destined in Jesus. This redemptive act and the saving act is to save the men and women from further sin.We have to believe in Jesus and believing in Jesus implies following his teachings and becoming a disciple- a sinless man, a challeneg to the modern man
