The First Disciples of Jesus
Gospel According to John
1.35-42
The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples and as he watched Jesus walk by , he exclaimed." Look here is the lamb of God!"The two disciples heard this and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following , he said to them" What are you looking for?"They said to him"Rabbi where are you staying?'He said to them "come and See'.They came and saw where he was staying and they remained with him that day...... Andrew found his brother Simon and said to him" we have found the Messiah" He brought Simon to Jesus who looked at him and said "You are Simon son of John .You are to be called Peter".
Here we find Jesus calling and forming his disciples. The important point is that they are all simple men who have no evil in mind. They are hard working people not knowledgeable in the eyes of the world. It is the greatest gift that a human being can get in this life, that God directly inviting someone to his Fold or Kingdom. And this is the Kingdom of eternal life, peace and Joy and Happiness.
God's call is never predictable, he calls the odd and the strange persons, who are not achievers in the world but whose heart is pure. His call can come from any direction and any quarter without prior notice. And when one gets the call the response to it has to be swift and prompt. The call is one of discipleship and an elevated life, untouched by worldly motives.Instead the mind has to be centred on Him.This elevated life means a life of pure Joy and Truth. And it is unparalleled in the world. One has to delink himself or herself from the worldly attachments and prefer a life that seeks the ultimate. It is not difficult but it involves commitment and dedication.God calls one to make one His own so that he remains with Him this life and next life. One need not enter a formal setting like a religious congregation to respond to this call , an ordinary life setting is sufficient to be with God.And here one can make the altar to offer our sacrifices and praise to God.It is really wonderful, unfathomable and mysterious.
